    Name
    Cordelia Nicolette
    Injury/Illness
    Cancer

Cordelia is an eight year old girl and the second to youngest of four girls. She missed the last three days of school because of a fever. We would later discover that her immune system was crashing, and her hemoglobin was dangerously low because she has leukemia. This was all within a whirlwind of 48 hours. Now three weeks later, she is tolerating chemo like a champ.

She has been able to find positives in so many of the tough situations that cancer has presented to her. I have compared her approach to Pollyanna and the glad game.  She isn't worried about losing her hair because then she won't have to brush it or wash it. But there are some things that we are having a hard time being positive about. The trips back and forth to the closest pediatric oncologist are taxing, the medical needs beyond the oncology appointments, and also making sure that her siblings are given the love and attention they deserve as well.  It's been scary physically, emotionally and financially.

We are grateful for the support of our family, friends and the oncology staff that have connected us with resources to help keep my priority caring for my family at home instead of being at work.

    Biospy Update

Cordelia is still quite exhausted from the procedure on Thursday.  We aren't expecting the full results until later next week, but the initial results from the oncologist were hard hitting.

The only things that we know for certain right now are that:

    1. The cancer is still present.

    2. She will be admitted to the hospital on Monday.

    3. The chemo medication they will be using is different than the previous two that she was on. This is part of the reason for hospitalization. They will monitor her closely for adverse reactions.

    4. We will be continuing on the once a week regiment for the foreseeable future.

    5. There is concern that they may not get the cancer to the desired level. From the beginning it was identified as complex and rare, hard to identify beyond the fact that it was there. Still hopeful that it is treatable.

She is aware of the hospitalization. She wasn't thrilled but continues to find the positives. This time it is looking forward to the mashed potatoes and chicken strips at the hospital.

Given the nature of her touch and go situation, I am questioning when or if I will be able to go back to work.  I am on unpaid leave.

    Weekly Chemo

As of today we have been traveling 160 miles round trip to the closest pediatric oncologist at least once per week since June 17, 2024.  Today we are here for a bone marrow biopsy.  The results of this appointment will determine whether or not the aggressive treatment continues or the course of treatment be altered.  Either way, treatment will continue for the next two years.  I am currently on leave without pay.  I am a single parent and this was a huge shock to my household, emotionally and financially.  Even after I am able to return to work, there will be times where I will not have leave time available to cover the time I will need to take her to appointments.  I also appreciate having the time to spend with her, keep her mind off what is going on.  We have a major craft that we do daily since she doesn't have much energy.  We also have smaller activities like coloring and board games to pass the time.  Some are fun and others educational.  She will be at home until January 2025 because of her compromised immune system.

    Thank you for your support.
