The Liedtke Family
Our Story
I am a mom of 3 young kids ages 6, 4, and 3. My oldest just started kindergarten in September when I tested positive for Covid-19 for the fourth time. I am also a full time RN who now works as a supervisor of 3 high demanding teams. My case of Covid was more severe than I had previously, but I did not need any medications. I had a fever, headache, body aches and fatigue, but still able to work for the week and attend after-school activities for my oldest. I was also very fit and active prior to my fourth infection strength training 3-5 times a week.
I started to notice something wasn’t quite right the following week when my heart rate would go really high just walking up my stairs. I also noticed the headache/migraine I had when I had Covid wasn’t going away. About 2 weeks after my infection, I started to notice that I was forgetting things, getting more dizzy, having chest pain, shortness of breath, rapid heart rates with minimal exertion, and extreme fatigue with doing minimal activity. I was having a hard time focusing and concentrating at work and by the time I got home, I was so exhausted I couldn’t help with dinner or bedtime for my kids.
I knew something was really wrong when I was driving home from work and I forgot how to get home on a route that I had taken for 2 years. I made an appointment to be seen by a nurse practitioner at my primary care office to talk about the high heart rates with minimal activity, dizziness, headaches, and fatigue. She sent me to physical therapy and suggested I get a brain MRI and started me on a medication for the headaches and the heart rate.
The medication was started and has since been increased and the results of the brain MRI came back abnormal so I was referred to a neurologist. At this point, it has been about 2 1/2 months since my infection. I requested a referral to a Long Haul Covid Clinic as that diagnosis had been thrown around for the symptoms I was experiencing. I was also restricted to working only a maximum of 20-25 hours a week from 40-45 hours a week.
Meanwhile, my children are still attending school, daycare, and after school activities. My family still needs groceries and we still have vehicles and a mortgage to pay for.
My middle child had surgery to have his tonsils taken out in October of 2024 among all the long COVID symptoms I was experiencing.
I have been worked up by a cardiologist and had an echo done to see if any damage has been done to my heart from Covid. I have found out that I now also have Celiac disease and have had to have an endoscopy with biopsy from a Gastroenterologist all from long Covid. I also had a cyst removed from my buttock crease by a Gynecologist as it grew in size and was becoming painful.
I am not one to ask for financial help, but I have seen so many doctors and have been to so many appointments for speech therapy and physical therapy to help me get back to my usual high functioning self that the medical debt I am experiencing is crippling me. I don’t want to lose my house because I got sick and ended up with a long haul issue from a virus. It’s been a long 6 months and while I am getting stronger and the doctor appointments are getting more spaced out, I am still only working at half the capacity as I used to. If you could help me and my family out I would be forever grateful and blessed beyond measure.
